CRUDE OIL DISTILLATION

Crude oil distillation is the primary refining process that separates raw crude oil into distinct fractions based on boiling point differences. This process forms the foundation for all downstream refining and upgrading activities. At ТОО «TRAFIGURA KAZAKHSTAN», distillation operations are designed for continuous, stable performance with high energy efficiency and product consistency.

Atmospheric distillation units heat crude oil in controlled furnaces and introduce it into fractionation columns where lighter components vaporize and are withdrawn at specific temperature zones. Products such as liquefied petroleum gases, naphtha, kerosene, and diesel are recovered through this process. Heavier components remain as atmospheric residue.

Vacuum distillation processes the atmospheric residue under reduced pressure, allowing separation of heavy gas oils and asphalt base materials without thermal cracking. This step maximizes crude oil utilization and provides essential feedstock for conversion units such as hydrocrackers and catalytic crackers.

Advanced process control systems regulate temperature, pressure, and reflux rates to ensure stable operation and consistent product quality. Heat recovery and energy integration systems reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Equipment integrity management ensures safe, long-term operation of furnaces, columns, and heat exchangers.

Distillation operations are designed to accommodate variations in crude oil quality while maintaining output specifications. This flexibility is critical for operational resilience and market responsiveness.

How TRAFIGURA KAZAKHSTAN Operates in Crude Oil Distillation

Our refinery operates distillation units on a continuous 24/7 basis, with feed rates adjusted to match upstream supply and downstream demand. Crude oil is pre-treated and desalinated before entering furnaces to protect equipment and maintain efficiency. Operators monitor process parameters from centralized control rooms using real-time data systems.

Product streams from distillation are routed directly to conversion units, treatment facilities, blending systems, or storage tanks. Maintenance activities are planned through scheduled turnarounds to minimize operational disruptions. This disciplined operational approach ensures high availability and consistent output.
